SUMMARY:Ruthie Dornfeld and Kristian Bugge
DESCRIPTION:Ruthie Dornfeld and Kristian Bugge\nTuesday March 3\nDoors 6:00 Show 7:30\nTickets $ 29.50 on sale now at Bozzini’s or call 604 792 0744 to reserve by phone\n***A late addition to the Spring calendar but we couldn’t turn down world class talent like this*** \nCo-presented with our friends at the Mission Folk Festival \nKristian and Ruthie first met each other in the Danish folk music circles in the mid-1990’s\, where Ruthie has been touring regularly and growing a reputation as a well-renowned artist and fiddler since the early 1980’s. Later when Kristian was a music student\, Ruthie was guest-teaching at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense\, Denmark and Kristian made sure to take the opportunity to study with her while she was there. \nAbout ten years later they met again in and around Seattle when Kristian had started touring and performing in the states. They formed the trio 3 Fiddlers 3 Traditions with métis fiddler Jamie Fox and have continued to meet and play together ever since. \nTheir repertoire spans from Danish traditional fiddle tunes and music from the other Nordic countries to old-time American and self-composed original tunes\, spiced up with a few Venezuelan waltzes. Music learned directly from folk music legends like Danish-American Dwight Lamb (1934-2024)\, Danish accordion player Karl Skaarup (1924-2013)\, fiddler Peter Uhrbrand from the Danish island of Fanø and many more. \nExpect everything from wild polkas and jigs to lyrical waltzes\, fiery reels and happy hopsas\, all served with humor and stories from their many years on the road. \nAbout the Artists:\nRuthie Dornfeld (fiddle): Seattle-based fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld has performed and taught for over thirty years at festivals\, schools\, music and dance camps throughout the U.S. and abroad\, from the Manaus Operahouse in the Brazilian Amazon to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki\, Finland. \nOriginally from Oregon\, Ruthie started out with classical violin\, then discovered fiddle music at age 18 and began her lifelong exploration of traditional fiddle music. She spent 15 years in New England\, where she attended Berklee College of Music\, was a member of the twin- fiddle stringband The Poodles\, played at innumerable contradances\, and commuted to Europe to play with The American Cafe Orchestra. \nSince 1996 she’s been back in the Pacific Northwest\, where she performs with the tango band Tangoheart\, accompanying country singing duo Margo Murphy and John Roberts\, and playing for local dances. \nRuthie also plays a 5 string medieval fiddle (vielle)\, and her compositions for that instrument are featured in the recording “Lay of the Waves”\, for which she received grants from Artist Trust and the Jack Straw Foundation. She is fluent in a wide range of styles\, from Celtic and old-time to Scandinavian and Eastern European\, and also enjoys chamber music and free improvisation. \nVisit Ruthie’s web site to find out more about what Ruthie is up to. \nKristian Bugge (fiddle): Kristian is very active in the Danish and Scandinavian folk music scene\, both as a musician and teacher. Kristian has specialized in the strong Danish folk music traditions\, playing with groups like Jensen & Bugge\, Morten Alfred & Vingården\, Baltic Crossing and Gangspil. \nThrough his master’s degree from the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music\, he specialized in the unique regional styles from many corners of Denmark\, at a level that very few of his generation can match or master today. He has continued this work also after his official studies ended and is today one of the most award-winning folk artists in Denmark. And recent years have also led to various crossover projects such as the cooperation with classical percussionist Ronni Kot Wenzel in the very active duo Wenzell & Bugge and the exciting Danish folk big band Habadekuk. \nIn 2004 Kristian Bugge became the first musician ever to receive the Radium Award\, awarded by the Danish Radiós P2. Since then he has received no less than 10 Danish Music Awards (Danish Grammys) both as a soloist and with his groups. To mention a few “Danish Folk Artist of the Year” in both 2011 and 2016 and latest the “Tradition Award” with Gangspil at the Danish Music Awards 2024! \n \nYou can find out about other events and info at Kristian Bugge Website

The band\, minus percussion and an organ\, plays every instrument. Everyone sings lead at some point\, background at others. Thanks to Vancouver producer Tom Dobrzanski\, the overall sound is highly polished\, but there are also live off-the-floor takes\, song snippets from jam sessions\, and voice memo recordings. \nThe result is an upbeat album that’s both cautionary and uplifting. “Leading up to the recording\, we asked environmental experts what was missing from the conversation\,” says McLeod. “And they all said the same thing: no more sad songs. We know the world’s messed up. What’s missing are more invitations to get real about making changes. And to do that\, we have to get less precious about the subject.” \nNo Help Coming is more playful than precious. This makes sense\, seeing it’s not about the survival of the planet\, which will be just fine without us (“After You’re Gone”\, “Ash”)\, but humanity. “It’s an album about resolve\,” says Glynn. “It’s upbeat because there’s a lot of resolve to be found in joy. And while humans have a lot of bad things going for us\, we can be pretty great at the joy part. So\, let’s use it.” \n\n\n\nAwards & Accolades\n\n\n\n2024 – Artist/Artist Group of the Year (nominee)\, BCTC Awards\n2022 – Traditional Roots Album of the Year (nominee)\, JUNO Awards\n2021 – Ensemble of the Year (nominee)\, Canadian Folk Music Awards\,\n2021 – Vocal Group of the Year (nominee)\, Canadian Folk Music Awards\n2019 – Best Folk Album (Winner)\, German Critics’ Music Association\n2018 – Vocal Group of the Year (nominee)\, Canadian Folk Music Awards\n2018 – Songwriter of the Year (nominee)\, Western Canadian Music Awards\n2014 – Best Vocal Group (nominee)\, Canadian Folk Music Awards\n2014 – Best Roots album (duo or group)\, Western Canadian Music Awards\n2007 – ‘Pushing the Boundaries’ (nominee)\, Canadian Folk Music Awards

SUMMARY:Morgan Davis
DESCRIPTION:Morgan Davis\nThursday April 30\nDoors 6:00 Show 7:30\nTickets $ 29.50 at Bozzini’s or call 604 792 0744 to reserve\nPresented by ManoFest Concerts \nAn East Coast Blues legend returns…\nLast show sold out. Don’t delay in  grabbing you rix \nFor nearly 60 years Morgan Davis has been playing the blues\, travelling across Canada\, the U.S. and Europe. His performances draw from a lifelong study of the rich tradition of country blues\, re-interpreting songs of the 1920s and 30s on electric instruments. His original compositions are infused with wit and a good dose of humour. \n\n\nOriginally from Detroit MI\, Morgan Davis grew up listening to a rich variety of rhythm and blues\, rock and roll\, and the emergence of the Motown sound. The music of Jimmy Reed\, Ike and Tina Turner\, Chuck Berry and Fats Domino was in the air\, emanating from car radios and jukeboxes. In 1962 his family relocated to southern California\, where Davis found the preponderance of surf music unappealing. He discovered Bob Dylan\, whose music introduced him to Woody Guthrie\, Leadbelly\, Pete Seeger and Blind Lemon Jefferson. The psychedelic era ushered in bands like Jimi Hendrix and Cream\, he attended concerts by the Doors\, Grateful Dead\, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, Buffalo Springfield\, Mothers of Invention and the Electric Flag. Davis began to play guitar at 16 years of age.\n\nGraduating from high school in 1965\, Davis enrolled in Long Beach State College\, where he became active in the campus anti-war movement as well as SDS. Being of draft age and refusing his 2-S student deferment\, he made the choice to remove himself from the U.S. war machine and move to Canada. He settled in Toronto\, which he happily found to be a city on the circuit of the great Chicago blues bands\, and a rich musical education began by watching Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Buddy Guy and Junior Wells. Davis also had the opportunity to see and meet many great country blues players – John Hammond\, Son House\, Booker White\, and Johnny Shines. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nAfter a brief stint teaching junior high school\, Davis began his musical career while residing at Rochdale College\, Toronto’s high rise mecca for artists . Opportunities to jam with other players were frequent\, and Davis happily immersed himself in music until he began to get the occaisional gig\, and he soon found himself in a band called the Rhythm Rockets\, which played a variety of vintage rock and roll\, country and blues. He began touring\, eventually forming his own blues band\, the Knights of the Mystic Sea. \nOver his five decade career Davis has opened the show for Willie Dixon\, Albert King\, John Hammond\, John Lee Hooker and Albert Collins. He has jammed with Muddy Waters\, James Cotton and Johnny Shines. He has backed up Sunnyland Slim\, Snooky Pryor\, Hubert Sumlin\, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith and Dr. John. \n\n\nDavis has released two 45 RPM records\, two LPs\, and nine CDs.  His songwriting talent received wide recognition when Colin James covered his searing ballad\, “Why’d You Lie?” \nFor the past 20 years he has made his home in Lunenburg County\, Nova Scotia.  Davis performs solo\, playing traditional and original blues on electric guitars and his three string cigar-box guitar. Still a road-addicted touring musicianer\, Davis averaged 200 days a year on the road…..until the sudden intrusion of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic. \n  \n…he hopes to be playing the blues until he drops. \n\n\n\n\n2018\none of the TOP CD’s of 2018\n“DOWNBEAT” \n2005\nSONG WRITER OF THE YEAR\n“Maple Blues Award” \n2004\nRECORDING OF THE YEAR\nPainkiller “Maple Blues Award” \n2004\nSONG WRITER OF THE YEAR – SOCAN\n“Maple Blues Award” \n2000\nACOUSTIC ARTIST OF THE YEAR\n“Toronto Blues Society” \n1999\nSOCAN SONG WRITER OF THE YEAR\n“Maple Blues Award” \n1995\nBLUES ARTIST OF THE YEAR\n“Jazz Report” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n2004\nBLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR\nPainkiller\n“JUNO” \n2004\nMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR\n“Maple Blues Award” \n2004\nPRODUCER OF THE YEAR\nMorgan Davis\nw/ Alec Fraser\n“Maple Blues Award” \n1999\n PRODUCER OF THE YEAR\nBlues Medicine\n“Maple Blues Award” \n1996\nBLUES WITH A FEELING AWARD\n“Toronto Blues Society” \n1994\nBLUES ARTIST OF THE YEAR\n“Jazz Report”

He has released 6 studio albums and his music has been featured on radio\, in film (The Big Year\, Our Idiot Brother)\, commercials (Volkswagen\, American Airlines)\, and as main title TV themes (Disney\, Global). Over the last 20 years Jeremy has toured the world and shared the stage with artists such as Alanis Morissette\, Blue Rodeo and Indigo Girls. His upbeat music with singable lyrics and heartfelt stories have earned him a dedicated fan base. \nHe is a co-creator\, songwriter and voice actor for the CBC animated series Jeremy and Jazzy\, a show about how feelings become songs\, songs become stories\, and music\, friendship\, and collaboration create joy. \n \n\n\n\n\nRyan McMahon\nLegendary Canadian TV/Radio personality Terry David Mulligan may have summed up Ryan best:“The complete package. Singer. Songwriter. Performer. Troublemaker. Passionate human being. For me… priceless.”\n\nEngaging and honest\, Ryan McMahon’s music is written from the heart and sung from the soul. It is as rock as folk can get before it starts to roll. A blend of folk\, americana and rock following the lead of his peers Jason Isbell\, Nathaniel Rateliff & Warren Zevon. The singer songwriter has enough wit and charm to get through any situation and his songwriting fits every emotion into his live performance.\n\nBorn on the coast of British Columbia in a small seaside hamlet on Vancouver Island\, Ryan’s first experiences performing were for family members laughing at his reiterations of comedians he loved. As he expelled versions of Eddie Murphy and Billy Connolly\, McMahon fed off the energy from his audiences at such a young age and continued to dive into the music influences of his parents\, which included a mix of Creedence Clearwater Revival\, Janis Joplin\, The Everly Brothers and BB King. He picked up a guitar in high school and became known for playing the Battle of the Bands and sneaking into the clubs in nearby cities as an under-aged performer.\n\nAfter graduating\, he moved across the pond into the Vancouver scene to join a group of musicians exploring the music and nightlife of the bigger arena. He spent a decade playing small clubs\, hosting open mics\, writing\, and recording. The songwriting and recording became his outlet for understanding the human experience and his ability to connect to audiences grew with each story he told. During his time in Vancouver\, he penned the album\, Weeks Months Years\, produced by Mike Rogerson at Bakerstreet in North Vancouver.\nThe muse of life brought him back to Vancouver Island in 2008 and as a solo artist\, McMahon won a record three Vancouver Island Music Awards for Album of the Year\, Male Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year in 2012 for his album ALL GOOD STORIES. After touring in support of the album\, he joined forces with Cory Woodward and Christopher Arruda to create Lion Bear Fox: a folk-rock trio that showcased and toured Canada\, the U.S. and in Europe until 2019. McMahon’s contributions to the band resulted in some of their most well-known songs\, like “Shine\,” “Freedom” and “Going\, Going\, Gone.”\n\nOver the years\, Ryan has opened for many iconic bands and artists from Buffy Ste. Marie and Nickelback to Canadian country artists Chad Brownlee\, Brett Kissel\, Dallas Smith and Aaron Pritchett. His talent\, persona and musicality opened many doors to the range of genres encompassed in his songs. In 2019\, as he returned from Tonder Festival in Denmark\, the opportunity to play with and meet Canadian Country Music singer Aaron Pritchett marked the embarking on a new chapter in music.\nPritchett took Ryan under his wing and lit a new fire under McMahon’s feet as the pandemic settled into the hearts of people around the world. After a few attempts at telling the story\, Ryan wrote “One More Fire” as a calling card for how his passion for music has been reignited.\n\n“Of course\, songs and art are subjective things\, but to me ‘One More Fire’ represents that yearning to obtain connectivity to the human race around me\,” says Ryan. “That feeling in my belly that I had when it was the night before battle of the bands in high school; or that notion that tomorrow I’m going into a new city to meet that community and make ’em sing\, laugh\, cry or dance or all of it all at the same time.”\n\nRyan admits that after years of scratching\, clawing\, winning\, losing\, and going through a pandemic that put the brakes on the entertainment industry\, the fire to create and perform remains burning in his heart — and won’t be extinguished anytime soon.

SUMMARY:The Ranters (Rockland Moran)
DESCRIPTION:The Ranters \nWednesday May 6\nDoors 6:00 Show 7:30 \nTickets $ 28.75  Available at Bozzini’s or call 604 792 0744 to reserve \nJoin Rocky Moran\, Gillian Wale\, and Fred Webber on the upright bass \nAt the beginning of 2020\, Gillian and Rockland were preparing for their annual trip south\, with our band “The Ranters” through the states of Washington\, Oregon\, California\, and this year Louisiana. \nThen fell the ides of March\, and with it the global pandemic.\nAll bets were off! Being locked down\, like the rest of the world and music industry\, they took advantage of the downtime to write and record nine songs of a ten song album. \nTaking inventory of the world around them\, they wanted to bring the current events to attention in our music\, as did the songwriters during the 1960’s. \nRant on\, Children\nIn these recordings\, The Ranters review subject matter of localized racism\, destruction of environment\, and increasing homelessness. Throughout these songs\, there lies a thread of healthy contempt for religious authority\, as well as a touch of humor and optimism.\n“The Ranters” hope that you enjoy this musical offering of contemporary roots/blues titled “Rant on\, Children”.
